So here we are six weeks into my internship and I have never been busier. Last Wednesday I read an article about the Internship programme from the Sunday Business Post. Here is the link to the article if you would like to read it How an internship can open doors . Every single paragraph in the article made a huge amount of sense to me because no matter what qualification someone has, experience is always required and so work experience with a company is always a great way to improve your chances of gaining full time employment. Also the experience gained while working with the company is a good way of boosting your CV.
My Internship at Bookaroom is like one long interview or in other words it’s like being part of an episode of The Apprentice and like The Apprentice every day I’m given new tasks to do, the only two differences are no boardroom battles and more importantly I don’t have a Sir Alan Sugar or Bill Cullen telling me “Your Fired” (Thank God).
It’s now the middle of August and you all know what that means. No, not the start of the English football season but the dreaded Leaving Cert results. This is our busiest time of the year as all the students who study in either the W.I.T or the W.C.F.E would be looking for accommodation. In the last few weeks we have been dealing with students who wish to continue their studies here in Waterford when the academic year begins on the 1st September for the W.I.T. and the 26th of September for the W.C.F.E. A lot of our Student Accommodation would be apartments which are really near the City Centre so it’s only walking distance away from the bus stops, shops and all the pubs and clubs. We also let houses to the students but a lot of them would be near the W.I.T.
Some of the new tasks that I was given to do in the last week was to show the students around some of the quality apartments that we have on offer. Yes, I did viewings before except this time I was actually answering the questions that our customers would ask. For example I now have to know the amount a student has to pay per term, when they have to pay it and also when the deposit has to be paid (Phew!). Now when I am asked the questions I know exactly what to say when these questions are asked. And the best thing about all of this is that I Rented Them.
So like The Apprentice, if you win a task you get rewarded. So, for successfully renting properties I , along with the rest of the staff was treated to lunch in The Cafe at Bishops Palace and it must said that the Club Sandwich was delicious.
